DMR | Detecon Management Report
DMR: What are the biggest challenges for getting the network up and how do you plan on addressing these?
A. Gude: They aren’t the typical ones of cell site development, spectrum acquisition or even network operations. These are areas of longstanding capability and expertise. The challenge with WiMAX mobile broadband is first with backhaul and second with back-room logistics of billing under various subscription models and user authentication. We are aware of the challenges and are focused on the solutions.
DMR: What are the biggest challenges you think Xohm may face in terms of market traction and penetration of WiMax based services?
A. Gude: Getting WiMAX capability incorporated in as wide a range of devices as possible as quickly as possible, at prices that will make access as pervasive as possible. We envision a time when business and consumer devices come embedded with WiMAX connectivity and await customer activation. With that capability in place, user creativity will unleash applications and usage the likes of which have never before been seen.
DMR: Sprint has taken a bit of a beating by Wall Street, partially due to their groundbreaking WiMax strategy – as Sprint’s WiMax visionary, any last comments to help change that perception and illuminate the WiMax opportunity?
A. Gude: Market forces and economic conditions impact all companies. You may have noticed our stock has steadily risen over recent weeks, and I feel recognition is increasing of Sprint’s unique assets of the WiMAX spectrum, powerhouse ecosystem and next generation network capabilities. Customer issues with the core business are separate from the new network, and are an area of intense focus for the company. As wireless voice minutes and telecom device purchases begin to plateau, new revenue streams will be sought. Mobile Internet data is the new frontier and Sprint, through Xohm, is pioneering on that front. Device innovation will be fostered by network innovation. Future network needs are being addressed with a time to market advantage, for which Sprint should be recognized and applauded.
